Disassembling and Packing Slim for Air Travel

A major benefit of Slim as a motion control solution is its ability to pack away into an airline compatible set of travel cases. This requires a partial disassembly of Slim's arm and a complete disassembly of its base. Below, you will find a series of videos outlining the disassembly process. Feel free to share any questions relating to Slim's disassembly/re-assembly in the comments under this post.

NOTE AS YOU DISASSEMBLE: Take photos of each step in your disassembly--Especially before disconnecting any cables. This (along with following the below steps in reverse) will provide you with a useful guide for re-assembly.

Step 1: Remove turnbuckles and riser from base.

Step 2: Mount arm onto newly configured base pedestal.

Step 3: Prepare the supplied toolkit for arm assembly/disassembly and keep it within reach of the arm.

Step 4: Connect arm to control box and power up.

Step 5: Configure arm into 'Disassemble' position.

Step 6: Remove cap from wrist 1.

Step 7: With the wrist 1 cap removed, you will see a number of cables attatched to their respective sockets. As pictured in the below videos, detach the bottom-most black and red cables from their sockets using your pliers. IMPORTANT: Use a gentle rocking motion to slowly message the red and black cable connectors out of their respective sockets paying close attention to not put unneeded stress upon the board beneath. IN ADDITION: Remove the bottom most thin, spiral brown and cream cable with your fingers by directly pulling on the cable itself as this is an especially delicate socket. Do NOT use pliers for this operation and only place minimal tugging force on the cable from directly above the socket. It should slide out with little effort.

Note on video above: Do NOT use pliers when removing the brown and cream colour cable. Use your fingers, grab the cable itself, and only place minimal tugging force on the cable from directly above the socket. It should slide out with little effort.

Step 8: Use a flathead to slide off the rubber cover of the below joint seam and remove the plastic spacer underneath (Place in a plastic bag as it will soon be accompanied by the screws seen below)

Step 9: Use the torx screw driver below to unscrew all of the torx screws picutured below. NOTE: Once the final screw is removed, the set of wrists on Slim will be loose so keep a hand on them for safety as you prepare to remove the entire wrist assembly.

Note: Use the below ratchet with a torx attachment to remove the screwn directly below wrist 1. It is hard to reach with the above torx screwdriver.

Step 10: Remove wrist assembly and replace cap back onto exposed internals. NOTE: Be careful as you remove the wrist assembly and gently feed your detached cables through the opening at the bottom of the wrist assembly--avoid catching the cables on any of the wrist internals or tugging on them in any way.

Step 11: Pack away wrist assembly.

Step 12: Remove cap from elbow joint.

Step 13: Disconnect bottom-most red and black cables as well as bottom-most brown and cream cable using techniques described in Step 7.

Step 14: Slide away rubber joint cover for elbow using flathead.

Step 15: Use the below pictured pistol grip hex driver to undo the join clasp on Slim's elbow join.

IMPORTANT: These clasps physically hold the joint together. As a result, take care when undoing and removing the joint clasp and be prepared to hold the join in place yourself as you remove the elbow's support. I find the easiest way is to position yourself so that you craddle the joint with your whole body when removing the joint clasp. There are delicate cables in this elbow joint, so make sure to avoide poulling the disconnected joint away without first disconnecting the internal cabling. When in doubt, move slowly and keep yourself in a stable standing position.

Step 16: Pack away disconnected arm portion.

Step 17: Slide away rubber joint cover.

Step 18: Remove joint clasp using technique described in step 15.

Step 19: Disconnect joint cables and remove joint using technique described in Step 7.

Step 20: Pack away disconnected joint.

Step 21: Remove cap from arm base joint.

Step 22: Disconnect black, red, and cream cables using technique described in step 7. IMPORTANT: There are additional red and black cables in this step. In total you will disconnect, one cream and brown cable, two black cables, and two red cables. They are pictured below.

Step 23: Remove the shoulder joint clasp using the technique described in step 15.

Step 24: Pack away Slim's shoulder, reconnect the base cap, and pack away the base joint.

Step 25: Disassemble Slim's base pedestal.

And you're done!! Congratulations! Let me know if you have any questions at all. Happy traveling!

Warm regards,
